Melbourne’s Tobias Hengeveld writes melodically vivid songs, riddled with unexpected angular pop-hooks. His distinctively sylvan voice tells personal experiences with wry lyrical candor.
Having extensively toured his 2009 debut release All The Lines Are Down through Australia and Europe, Tobias’ follow-up The Daylight Express was nominated for an Age Music Victoria Award in 2014.
Due for release April 2019, NAUGHTS & ONES is a triumphant mirror-maze of snappy pop tunes set in a hinterland of darker rock ballads.
Written slowly, the songs were reimagined at lightning-speed in collaboration with producer/drummer Rohan Sforcina (Head Gap/Oh Mercy/Dune Rats). The process breathed energy and an air of surprise into a record that plumbs ever-deeper the sounds of Tobias’ childhood radio hits, by the likes of XTC, Splits Enz, The Stranglers, Roxy Music and The Church. Formative musical influences that molded his signature bent for song construction.
“Hengeveld casts some uncanny spell over the ears - not to mention the heart and head as well.” (Dom Alessio – Triple J)
